The Garden Route in South Africa is a true paradise for travelers who long for breathtaking nature, unforgettable adventures and culinary delights. On this fascinating trip you'll find a carefully curated list of top places, things to do and recommended accommodations and restaurants along the way. You can spend easily one month on this route to see all places in detail. If you do not have this much time I recommend to spend at least 1 week to see 3-4 different places along the way.


1. Discover paradise in Tsitsikamma National Park

The Tsitsikamma National Park on the Garden Route in South Africa is a true paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. With breathtaking coastal scenery, lush forests and exciting activities, this national park offers unforgettable experiences.


Hikes in the jungle of Tsitsikamma National Park The jungle hikes take you through dense forests with lush vegetation. You will come across waterfalls, small streams and rivers hidden amidst this natural beauty. The most famous hike is the Storms River Mouth Trail, which takes you to an impressive suspension bridge over Storms River Mouth. It offers a breathtaking view of the raging river and the unspoilt stretch of coast. The bridge rocks slightly, making crossing an exciting experience


Admission: Admission to Tsitsikamma National Park costs about 200 South African Rand (about 10EUR / US$14) for international visitors, but it's well worth it.

- Getting up early: The hikes are particularly attractive in the morning, when nature awakens and the light is perfect for photos.

- Black Oystercatcher: This restaurant is known for its fresh seafood, especially oysters. You should definitely try the oysters to experience the taste of the region.

- Marilyn's 60's Diner: Here you can enjoy classic American diner fare, like burgers and milkshakes, in a nostalgic atmosphere.




2. Plettenberg Bay: Discover the jewel of the Garden Route

Welcome to Plettenberg Bay, a beautiful coastal town on South Africa's Garden Route. This charming place entices travelers with its natural beauty, fun activities and relaxing atmosphere.


Robberg Nature Reserve: A hike on the edge of paradise

Robberg Nature Reserve is a magical place with breathtaking sea views, impressive rock formations and abundant wildlife. The hikes take you along the cliffs and offer great photo opportunities. Keep an eye out for dolphins and seals in the waters below.

As whale watching tours are very popular, it is advisable to book in advance to ensure you get a spot.

- The Fat Fish: This restaurant offers a variety of seafood including fresh fish and shellfish. A must is the freshly caught fish of the day.

- The Anchorage: Here you can enjoy international cuisine, but their main focus is preparing delicious steaks.



4. Wilderness: The natural paradise on the Garden Route

A beautiful seaside town, Wilderness is a place that immerses you in natural beauty. This idyllic location lures with spectacular nature and activities that inspire both adventurers and those seeking relaxation along the Garden Route.

7. Barrydale: Art, culture and nature in the Klein Karoo

Welcome to Barrydale, a quaint Klein Karoo village known for its creative vibe, handcrafted products and stunning scenery.


Route 62: One of the most beautiful roads in the world

Considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world, Route 62 meanders through the spectacular scenery of the Klein Karoo. During the ride you can enjoy breathtaking views of mountains, vineyards and dry river beds. There are numerous charming little villages along the route that invite you to linger.


Admission: Driving along Route 62 does not require any entrance fees, but you should factor in the cost of gas.

Take small detours to the vineyards along the route and taste some of the region's excellent wines.

8. Hermanus: A paradise for whale watching and nature lovers

A charming coastal town on the shores of Walker Bay in South Africa, Hermanus is famous for its stunning scenery and world-class whale watching opportunities.

Whale season runs from June to November, with September and October being the best months for spotting. - Kitchen Windows Beach Restaurant: This cozy Jeffreys Bay beachfront restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere and delicious food at affordable prices. The fresh seafood is special and be sure to try the famous fish dishes while enjoying the view of the sea.

- The Mexican Restaurant: If you are in the mood for Mexican cuisine, you should visit the Mexican Restaurant. Here you can enjoy delicious tacos, burritos and nachos. It is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors.



10. The Crags: A paradise for nature and animal lovers

The Crags is a magical site on South Africa's Garden Route, stretching between Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley. A true paradise for nature and animal lovers, this region offers a variety of activities to experience the beauty of nature.


Visit to the Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary:

Here you can experience a variety of monkey species in their natural habitat. The animals were rescued and rehabilitated and now live in a protected forest area. This is a great opportunity to learn more about these fascinating animals and see them up close


Admission: Adult admission is usually around ZAR240-260 (about 12EUR / US$13), children pay less.

- Low budget - Wild Spirit Backpackers: I love this place! Here you can stay in dorms or budget rooms and breakfast is always freshly made with ingredients from the garden. The spirit of this accommodation is simply something very special.


Restaurant:

- Peppermill Café: The Peppermill Café is a charming restaurant in the heart of The Crags. It is known for its relaxed atmosphere and good-value, home-cooked cuisine. The use of fresh and local ingredients is special.




The ideal route and length of stay:

The ideal route for the Garden Route starts in Port Elizabeth and ends in Cape Town or vice versa. Plan at least 7 to 10 days (oneway) to enjoy the beauty of the region.


Means of transport and costs:

Various modes of transportation are available along the Garden Route, including rental cars, buses and guided tours. I recommend a rental car if you are not traveling alone. As a solo traveler I can fully recommend Bazbus.

After the Garden Route, destinations such as Cape Town or the Panorama Route between Johannesburg and the Kruger Nationalpark are place worth to visit.
