Oman, a land of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern innovation and breathtaking landscapes enchant the senses. From majestic mosques to endless deserts, from fascinating markets to picturesque villages, Oman has something for every traveller. This blog post refers to the northern region of Oman. The south is more of a classic holiday region, which despite everything has a lot to offer. During our round trip, however, we only explored the north. So let's dive into the Top 10 Activities this magical destination has to offer.
1. Cultural Discoveries in Muscat
In the capital, Muscat, you can experience Oman's rich cultural heritage. The Royal Opera House is an architectural gem that offers world-class performances. The Bait Al Zubair Museum and the Omani-French Museum provide an insight into the country's history and culture.
The Must-See in Muscat is the Sultan Qaboos Mosque. It is an architectural masterpiece with its huge main dome and sparkling Swarovski chandelier as breathtaking highlights. The mosque opens its doors to visitors of different faiths and offers a unique opportunity to experience Oman's culture and spirituality.
In front of the location you can get an audio guide to learn a lot about the mosque. Be aware that the dress code is very strict here and you must cover your legs, arms, and hair. You can buy appropriate clothing on site.
2. Explore Nizwa
The town of Nizwa is a treasure of bygone times. The Nizwa Fort is a stunning example of Omani architecture and offers panoramic views of the city and mountains. The entrance to the fort is around 5 OMR (12EUR / US$13).
There is also the Nizwa Souq on site. It is the perfect place to shop for handcrafted souvenirs and immerse yourself in local culture.
Here, I took beautiful amphorae for the garden. There is no way you can get them as cheaply as here in Germany.
3. Adventures in Wahiba Sands
The Wahiba Sands are an unreal desert landscape of golden sand dunes. We spent one night in a desert camp, which was really a unique experience. First you have to deflate your tires a little bit at one of the local shops in the town before you enter the desert. Than you drive to the camp in your rented 4x4 car (a camp employee drives ahead). In the camp you can go sandboarding, camel riding, explore dunes and of course marvel at the sparkling starry sky in the evening. It was also great to talk to the Bedouins and get insights into their life and the desert.
4. Jebel Sham's Hike
The Balcony Walk Hike in Jebel Shams is a walker's paradise. The trail meanders along the dramatic rim of the "Grand Canyon of Oman". The views from up here are stunning, especially at sunrise and sunset. During the hike you can admire the fascinating geological formations and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains. After about 1-1.5 hours you reach the remains of a small village. It was fascinating to see the remoteness in which people lived here.
Be sure to take enough to drink with you, as there are no opportunities to buy anything during the hike. Also, there are no toilets along the way.
5 Refreshment in the wadis
The wadis are havens of tranquility and beauty in the heart of the desert. Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid are popular destinations for hikers and swimmers. Hike along the riverbeds, step through crystal clear pools and admire the lush vegetation. With us it was mostly 40 degrees, so the wadis are a pleasant way to cool off. For Wadi Shab you first have to take a 2 min boat ride for 1 OMR (2,50EUR / US$2,60) and than it is an easy 45-min walk along beautiful nature.
Please note the dress code here as well, that as a woman you should cover your knees and shoulders. I also recommend keeping water shoes or sports shoes on in the water, because along the wadi you can climb over stones to explore it completely.
6. Idyllic Musandam
Often referred to as the "Norway of the East," Musandam is a coastal paradise dotted with fjord-like bays. A dhow cruise through these scenic waters is an unforgettable experience. The majestic rock formations, crystal clear waters and secluded beaches invite you to swim, snorkel and relax. The traditional fishing villages in Musandam offer a glimpse of life in coastal communities. Visit Khasab, the capital of Musandam, and explore the colorful souq selling spices, handicrafts and fresh produce. The remains of Khasab Fort are a testament to the region's rich history.
7. Experience Bahla's charm
Bahla, a UNESCO World Heritage City, is an oasis of charm and history. The mud-plastered houses and ancient forts are a reflection of Omani architecture. The town is known for its pottery, and a stroll through the narrow streets leads to workshops where this traditional craft is still alive. The mighty Bahla Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, towers over the city. This impressive bulwark is a masterpiece of Omani architecture and offers great views of the surrounding countryside. The rural surroundings of Bahla are characterized by terraced fields where fruit, vegetables and date palms thrive. The traditional irrigation method, the "falaj", is an example of sustainable water management in Oman.
8. Diving and Snorkeling in Daymaniyat
The Daymaniyat Archipelago is a protected marine reserve off the coast of Oman. The waters are crystal clear and home to an amazing variety of marine life. Scuba dive or snorkel to discover colorful coral reefs, exotic fish species, and maybe even sea turtles and sharks. The waters are often calm and offer ideal conditions for water sports activities. For divers there are various dive sites with different depths and levels of difficulty. From beginners to experienced divers, there is something for everyone to explore. The Daymaniyat Archipelago is not only a paradise for underwater photography, but also a place where you will fall in love with the unspoiled beauty of the seas.
9. Explore Misfat Al Abriyeen
Misfat al Abriyeen is a picturesque mountain village that seems to have come from another time. The traditional adobe houses and terraced gardens give it a unique charm. Stroll through the narrow streets, admire the green landscape and immerse yourself in the culture of the locals. The houses often have roof terraces overlooking the beautiful gardens where they grow their own fruits.

10. The Splendor of the Jabal Akhdar Mountains:
The Jabal Akhdar Mountains are known for their cooler temperatures, which offer a welcome respite from the desert heat. The mountain is home to a variety of endemic plant species that have adapted to the harsh climate. The drive up the mountain is an adventure in itself - narrow roads wind through gorges and offer breathtaking views. Hiking is an absolute must here. The area offers various hiking trails, from relaxed walks to more challenging hikes. The "Wadi Ghul" or "Grand Canyon of Oman" is a spectacular highlight. The area is also a bird watcher's paradise and a hotspot for stargazing due to the low level of light pollution.
If you can, spend the night at Alila Jabal Akhdar. A remote luxury hotel with a valley view you will never forget. Don't forget to bring warm clothes as it can be quite cold, especially during night, up here.
