When planning your trip to Bali, you have countless options. From spectacular sunrises to fascinating underwater worlds, from cultural discoveries to pure relaxation - Bali offers an incomparable range of experiences for travelers of all kinds.

In this blog post I have put together the top 12 experiences in Bali that will make your trip an unforgettable adventure. Whether you are a nature lover, water sports enthusiast, culture fan or epicure - here you will find inspiration and valuable tips for your travel preparations. Immerse yourself in the diversity of this magical island and let yourself be inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead of you.

1. Mount Batur Sunrise Tour: A spectacular nature experience

Mount Batur in Bali is more than just a mountain – it is a symbol of adventure and breathtaking natural beauty. The best part is that you can climb it to witness one of the most spectacular sunrises of your life.

The climb usually begins in the early hours of the morning when it is still dark. This may seem challenging at first, but the views that await you at the summit are worth every effort. During the climb you will hike through a lush rainforest that is slowly illuminated by the first rays of sun. Once you reach the summit, you can experience one of the most beautiful sunrises. The rising sun bathes the surrounding landscape in a warm, golden light, and you'll understand why so many people undertake this hike. The view of the crater lake and the surrounding mountains is simply magical.

Hiking Mount Batur is doable for most people but requires basic physical fitness. The route is about 5 kilometers long and the climb usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. It is advisable to dress warmly as it can be chilly at the summit and bring a flashlight as the climb begins in the dark. (Check out this tour*)

As far as I know, the climb is only possible with a guide. On some tours you have the opportunity to bathe in hot springs on the descent. We skipped this stop because we were looking forward to a relaxing morning by our hotel pool.

4. Pool Villa / Bamboo Villa - Luxury at an Affordable Price

I would say that nowhere else will you find such good value for money and a variety of accommodations as in Bali. Whether in a hostel, glamping (glamorous camping), a Bamboo Villa or one of the other unique accommodation options, there is something to suit every budget. One of the most popular and exclusive ways to stay in Bali is in a Pool Villa or Bamboo Villa. Here you can experience the perfect mix of luxury and nature. 5. Monkey Park - Meet the lively locals

In Bali you will find a vibrant monkey population and fascinating monkey parks. These small primates are not only charming and playful, but also an important cultural and ecological component of the island. The monkeys in Bali are mostly long-tailed macaques, also known as Balinese monkeys. They can be found in the island's dense forests and sacred temples. These monkeys are curious and clever, making them fascinating creatures.

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud is not only a tourist highlight, but also a place for research and protection of the monkey population. Here you can observe the monkeys in their natural environment and learn more about their lifestyle and their importance for Balinese culture.

The Sangeh Monkey Forest is less busy than the one in Ubud, giving it a quieter atmosphere. Here you can watch the monkeys up close and explore the surrounding temples.

When visiting the monkeys in Bali, it is important to take some precautions. These animals are wild and their actions can be unpredictable. Here are some tips:

  • Don't feed the monkeys: Although it can be tempting to feed the monkeys, it's important not to. Human food can be harmful to them.

  • Keep your distance: Try to maintain a respectful distance from the monkeys and do not touch them.

  • Avoid jewelry and loose objects: The monkeys may be tempted to grab shiny or loose objects.

  • Respect the park's rules: When visiting a monkey park, pay attention to the park's instructions and rules to ensure both your safety and that of the monkeys.

6. Cooking class - get to know the spices and flavors of Bali

One of the best ways to experience the culture of a place is through its cuisine. Bali is known for having a rich and diverse culinary tradition, and cooking classes on the island offer travelers the opportunity to experience and learn these flavors first hand. (Check out the class I booked)

Why cooking courses in Bali are so special:

  1. Balinese Diversity: Balinese cuisine is extremely diverse, offering a wide range of dishes ranging from hearty curries to refreshing salads. In a cooking class, you can learn how to prepare these dishes and discover the unique spices and ingredients that make them up.

  2. Local Ingredients: The use of fresh and local ingredients is an important part of Balinese cuisine. During the cooking class you can often go to markets and choose fresh products to prepare your meal.

7. Rice Terraces - Explore scenic landscapes

Bali's rice terraces are not only agricultural wonders, but also symbols of the island's natural beauty and cultural significance. These lush, green fields are an impressive sight and a place for peace and contemplation. Rice is the staple food of the Balinese population and the cultivation of rice has a long tradition on the island. The rice terraces are often surrounded by temples and shrines, reflecting the Balinese's connection to nature.

Popular rice terraces in Bali:

  • Tegallalang Rice Terraces, Ubud: Arguably the most famous in Bali, these rice terraces are located near Ubud. The terraces are laid out in artistic patterns of small rice fields and palm trees and offer breathtaking views.

  • Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, Tabanan: This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a showcase of traditional Balinese rice terraces. Here you can walk for hours between the rice fields and enjoy the impressive views.

The rice terraces offer excellent hiking opportunities. You can explore the narrow paths between the fields and enjoy the fresh air and the view. It's best to book a local guide because he can tell you about the best places and a lot about the history.

8. Beach/Day Club - Relaxing by the water

Many people associate Bali with stunning beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. And there's no better place to enjoy the best of both worlds than at the island's beach clubs and day clubs. These exclusive oases not only offer luxurious amenities, but also a spectacular setting to fully experience the Balinese paradise.

You can find beach clubs mainly in the south-west of the island (Uluwatu & Canggu) and you can enjoy sun, sand and sea here. Most of the beach clubs also have a pool. Pool clubs you will find mainly inland near Ubud. In all clubs you can enjoy a relaxing day with first-class service, music, refreshing cocktails and culinary delicacies.

With the stunning infinity pool from which you can enjoy picturesque views of the surrounding countryside, this dayclub is a paradise for relaxation and recreation.

9. Temple / Kecak Dance: Cultural Insights

The Kecak dance, also known as the "Monkey Dance" or the "Fire Dance", is one of the most famous traditional dance forms in Bali, reflecting the island's rich cultural history. This dramatic dance attracts visitors from all over the world and offers a fascinating insight into the mystical world of Bali. The Kecak dance has its roots in the Ramayana epic, one of the most important Hindu texts and the story is about Prince Rama, his wife Sita and the demon king Ravana. It focuses on a

crucial moment in history when Rama must rescue Sita from the clutches of Ravana. In addition to the dancers and the fire play, the choir orchestra is one of the special features. The orchestra consists of dozens or even hundreds of men who sit in concentric circles and shout "cak-cak-cak" to create the rhythm. This impressive vocal orchestra replaces the traditional musical accompaniment and creates a hypnotic soundscape.

Where to Experience the Kecak Dance:

  • Uluwatu Temple: One of the most famous performance venues for the Kecak dance is the Uluwatu Temple, spectacularly situated on the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean. The evening performances against this breathtaking backdrop are particularly popular. (Check out this tour*)

  • Ubud: In Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, there are numerous places where you can see the Kecak dance. Saraswati Temple and Pura Dalem Temple are popular performance venues. (Check out this tour*)

  • Tanah Lot: Tanah Lot Temple also offers performances of the Kecak dance at sunset. The combination of the sacred atmosphere of the temple and the dramatic dance is unforgettable.

10. Rent a scooter - freedom on two wheels

Renting and driving a scooter in Bali is one of the best ways to explore the island and enjoy the freedom of the road. I have already explored the island twice on my scooter. These small, nimble vehicles allow you to discover Bali's hidden gems, off the beaten path, and are an adventure in themselves.

Why scooter riding is so popular in Bali:

  1. Flexibility: With a scooter you are flexible and independent. You can visit places that are difficult to reach with larger vehicles and spontaneously explore new routes. You can also avoid big traffic jams.

  2. Cost-effective: Renting a scooter is usually more affordable than renting a car or booking tours. You save money on transportation and can spend it on experiences instead.

  3. Cultural Experience: Riding a scooter in Bali is a cultural experience in itself. You will have the opportunity to observe local life up close and interact with people.

  4. Adventure: Bali offers a diverse landscape, from rice terraces to volcanoes and coastal roads. With a scooter you can experience all these adventures and discover the different facets of the island.

  • Licensing: Make sure you have a valid international driver's license or a Balinese driver's license before renting a scooter. Local laws must be observed.

  • Protective Clothing: Always wear a helmet and appropriate protective clothing to ensure your safety. It's best to always have a rain cape with you.

  • Be careful in traffic: Traffic in Bali can be chaotic. Drive carefully and with foresight and pay attention to other road users, especially in busy cities. It can also happen here that animals run into the street.

  • Maps and GPS: Use maps or GPS to help you find your way, especially when driving into unfamiliar areas. You can usually borrow a cell phone holder from the scooter rental company.

11. Island Feeling - Explore Nusa Islands and Gilis

If you're looking for a sense of tropical isolation and island adventure, then the Nusa Islands and the Gilis off the coast of Bali are the perfect destinations. These small islands offer a contrast to the hustle and bustle of mainland Balinese and are known for their stunning beaches, clear waters and relaxed atmosphere.

The Nusa Islands: Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan

The largest of the Nusa Islands is Nusa Penida, known for its dramatic coastlines, majestic cliffs and impressive viewpoints such as Klingking Beach and Broken Beach. Here you can snorkel and dive and discover fascinating marine life such as manta rays and colorful coral reefs. Nusa Lembongan is known for its relaxed atmosphere and picturesque beaches such as Dream Beach and Mushroom Bay. It's also a great place to try out water sports like surfing and stand-up paddleboarding. The smallest of the Nusa Islands, Nusa Ceningan, is accessible via a bridge from Nusa Lembongan. Here you can explore the famous Blue Lagoon, where you can swim in crystal clear water.

The Gilis: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno

Gili Trawangan is the largest and busiest of the Gilis and is known for its vibrant nightlife, relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches. Here you will find a variety of bars, restaurants and activities such as diving and snorkeling. Gili Air offers a quieter atmosphere and is ideal for travelers looking for a relaxed environment. You can snorkel, bike and experience the local culture here. The quietest of the Gilis, Gili Meno is perfect for those who want to truly unwind and enjoy nature. The island is also an important breeding ground for sea turtles. All islands have waters rich in marine life and coral reefs that are great for snorkeling and diving. For an ideal end to the day, enjoy the spectacular sunsets and don't miss the opportunity to enjoy dinner on the beach.

Motorized vehicles are prohibited on the Gilis, contributing to a relaxed and environmentally friendly atmosphere. In the Nusa Islands, scooters are the main form of transport. But you can also book a daytrip. (Check out this tour*)

12. Waterfall - Experience a natural spectacle

Bali is particularly impressive with its breathtaking natural beauty, which is reflected in its waterfalls. The numerous waterfalls on the island are not only a refreshing experience, but also a reflection of the lush tropical landscape. Most of the waterfalls can be found inland (Ubud & Munduk), although the waterfalls in and around Munduk are less well-known than those around Ubud. Entrance to the waterfalls usually costs between 10k and 30k IDR (0.60€ - 1.80€). You can see an overview of the best waterfalls and where you can find them on the island in my Google My Maps in my Shop.

My Top 3 waterfalls in Bali:

  1. Sekumpul Waterfalls: The Sekumpul Waterfalls in northern Bali are one of the most impressive sets of waterfalls on the island. The path to them leads through terraced fields and villages and rewards you with a spectacular view.

  2. Kanto Lampo Waterfall: Located in the lush forests close to Ubud, Kanto Lampo Waterfall is a breathtaking natural wonder with crystal clear pools. It's really no longer an insider tip, so it can get very crowded at times.

  3. Banyumala Waterfall: Banyumala Waterfall is a hidden gem in North Bali. It is surrounded by a dense forest and offers a refreshing pool for swimming. It is one of my favourites as it is quite unkown.

A visit to the waterfalls in Bali not only offers the opportunity for relaxation and refreshment, but also a glimpse of the island's impressive natural beauty. It's best to travel by scooter or you can also book a tour.
